One of the reasons that Castle Architectural Metals has been New York’s preeminent architectural metal fabricator is that we always put safety first. Not just to ensure the well being of our team, but also to prevent any mishaps when working on a client project. With the hot summer months ahead, we prepare our workers with the education they need to stay safe.
Most people don’t realize that managing heat stress in summer shop conditions requires more than just staying well hydrated, and that heat stroke can happen in both indoor and outdoor conditions. There are a number of factors that come into play when heat is involved. Below are just some of strategies that we employ that when combined, result in superior project outcomes and no injuries or health related problems.
Prevention and Education Make a Difference
Hydration: It’s easy to forget to stay hydrated when you are busy working, so our managers build in regular water breaks as a quick reminder.
Scheduling: When the weather forecast calls for hot weather, our supervisors make a point to organize the work at hand in direct relation to the predicted temperatures. Project work that requires physically demanding work is scheduled for the early morning hours or later in the shift.
Breaks: When it comes to beating the heat, it’s crucial to enforce a rule that breaks must be taken in the shade or air conditioned areas so workers can avoid rising body temperatures that can make them feel ill.

More Tips to Stay Cool
- Ensure adequate ventilation in the shop (fans or spot cooling) to improve airflow
- Mandate that workers wear lightweight and breathable clothing
- Keep an eye on your co-workers to see if they seem dizzy or look like they aren’t feeling well.
