Equipment: Dust Collection Systems & Shop Air Quality

As the construction industry evolves, so does the technology that supports it. Since we are located in the greater New York region, we work with architects and construction managers on a wide variety of projects that affect both the equipment we use and the spaces where our employees work. Periodically we do a full review to make sure that our work areas are up to par and that we monitor how any new equipment we bring in that could potentially alter safe work conditions.

Protecting Workers and Your Equipment

Maintaining air quality in the shop is a top priority. There are two important components to be considered as reduced quality can not only affect the health of workers, but can also influence the longevity of your equipment. Dust collection systems and air filtration capture fine particulate matter that can find its way into the lungs of your workers and permeate your equipment.

Equipment to ensure proper air quality

Dust Collect Systems

Never underestimate the need for effective dust collection systems. Some to consider employing in your shop:

  • Cyclone Systems (2-Stage): These systems, such as the JET JCDC-3 (3HP, ) Oneida Air 5hp, use centrifugal force to separate dust before it hits the filter, allowing for 99%+ efficiency.
  • Canister Kits (1-Stage): Options like the Jet DC-1200VX-CK1 offer high CFM (air volume) to move large volumes of air for multiple machines.
  • Portable Units: Useful for smaller shops needing on-the-spot capture for sanders or saws.

Air Quality

To maintain proper air quality, it’s all about the use of proper filters, especially those systems that are OSHA compliant or meet NFPA standards for combustible dust. Vigilant maintenance is important as 1-stage systems can lose suction as they fill and filters can easily become clogged.

  • Micron Rating: Effective filters should capture particles below 1 micron to prevent fine dust from circulating.
  • CFM (Cubic Feet per Minute): Higher CFM generally means better suction and air movement, though static pressure (suction strength) is also critical.
  • Air Filtration System: A separate air cleaner (often ceiling-mounted) is recommended to capture the fine, airborne dust that primary collection systems miss.
